A 46-year-old BJP functionary was hacked to death by seven-bike borne men, who first hurled countrymade bombs at him, near Villianur in Puducherry on Sunday night.
Police identified the deceased as Senthil Kumaran, of Kannuvapet, and said the incident happened at Sri Hariharan Sweets and Bakery near Kannagi Government High School at 9:34pm.
A CCTV video released by police showed assailants covering their faces reach the shop on three bikes and hurl two countrymade bombs one after the other, following which Kumaran collapses on the ground. The gang then attacked him with sharp weapons.

Kumaran, reportedly a supporter of Home Minister A Nammassivayam, is a BJP functionary in the Mangalam constituency of the Union Territory.
Soon after the incident, a huge crowd of BJP supporters gathered at the spot. Kumaran’s body was sent to the government hospital in Kathirkamam.
As police registered a case of murder and were searching for the assailants, seven men surrendered before a court at Tiruchirapalli, in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, on Monday.
“This was a planned murder. Kumaran had issues with a person who had been associated with him for a long time. We are yet to confirm the details. So we cannot disclose the name and other details. We received the information that the accused have surrendered before the court. The inquiry is on,” a police officer from Villianur said.
Kumaran is survived by his wife, Punitha, and two children.
