The time has come. After months of selections and weeks of rehearsals, the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 kicked off tonight with semi-final 1.

There were 15 acts competing in Tuesday night’s show, but only 10 of them progressed to the grand final on Saturday.

Taking place in Basel’s St. Jakobshalle arena, we were guided through proceedings by hosts Hazel Brugger and Sandra Studer.

Regarding belgium, i feel bad cause i woul’ve preferred it qualifying over others
However, they sang off key basically the whole first part, could barely hear them sing cause the music was too loud, so when that long note came it didn’t feel impactful as it was supposed to
And at the end of the day, it was overhyped af, this was no contender for the win at all, it screamed 8th place in semifinal/borderline qualifier, so it’s not as shocking as ppl say

If it’s already feel like twice 17 with the last two songs of semifinal one not qualifying, God forbid we get Serbia not qualifying and a first time winner.

Sometimes the fandom forgets it’s a song contest, and not a show contest, wiwi and others were hyped because of Belgium’s staging, but if the people at home don’t ‘feel’ the song, good staging isn’t enough. Maybe these days Eurovision is more about authenticity than about a million dollar staging. And so it should, because countries with smaller budgets can still win.

I agree with you, for example Portugal and The Netherlands , they don’t need props and pyros to went through the final. People’s at home resonate with the song. The Netherlands has not much staging, just a one shot take and a professional camera work and it works out great.

Exhibit a: Cyprus. Cyprus seemed to have everything it needed to qualify, the last running order spot and interesting staging, but it didn’t go through because the song wasn’t that great in the first place and Theo Evan’s vocals were rather imperfect.

Great show by Switzerland! Some countries really stood out and will do well in the final. As this was televotes only, I expect Estonia, Sweden and Alba nia to top the results. But I think lots of people are sleeping on San Marino, Gabry Ponte is very popular and the song is mainstream/ quite catchy – he will pull of a great score on Saturday. All the automatik qualifiers were excellent in this semi and I think we can expect great televote support for Italy and jury support for Switzerland in the final, beautiful songs both of them. Right now,… Read more »

I think Italy definitely gave their 12 points to San Marino last night. It’s almost cheating since the song was originally the Sanremo theme song, but every bit helps.

This is just my opinion but I think that one of the most overrated songs this year was Latvia. I personally do not think Latvia will qualify for the following reasons. 1) Even though The title translates to “A chant for Happiness” i don’t think a lot of people feel happy afterwards. It scares me at times and has Too much Ailen like lyrics. 2) The lyrics. I don’t think a lot of people will like this song if they don’t understand Latvian. Bearing in mind that Lithuania is voting in their semi final might give them about 6-8 points… Read more »

Congratulations to all Qualifiers! As every year we have shocks, and we have to live with it in the future. Btw, I have an unpolular opinion question. I have nothnig against the Italian entry. To be honest, I was more distracted by the subtitles than the song itself. EBU allowed them to translate the entire song in English. Back in 2022, the Serbian entry In Corpore Sano by Konstrakta had just couple of lines of English subtitles during the entire performance. I remember Konstrakta being interviewed by local TV, and she said that the Serbian delegation initially planned to translate… Read more »

Actually, I found I could EITHER read the lyrics OR take in the song and performance. I chose the latter and ignored the lyrics completely.

I think having fewer lyrics on screen would have been a better choice for Italy.

As for the rules, they do feel inconsistent and unfair on many levels. Not just in this.

I have been watching Eurovision for many years, always getting a bit of goosbumps when upon the famous Eurovision theme intro when the competition starts..but this year, I got dissapointed. Such poor quality. Where are the good songs? The point is not who’s going to win but rather who is a little better amongst average to bad songs. Fans seem to discuss issues like jury presence in the semis, Israel and the war, flags, LGBTQ representation, how were the hosts, draw etc but not the elephant in the room: the songs are NOT good. Brings back good songs!!

There’s always a few songs that I’m not initially sold on at first, but somehow they organically grow and decide to stay in my head. This year I suppose those are Luxemboutgh and… Norway. Kyle was pretty good and I guess it helps that there’s sonething in the melody of the chorus that reminds me of Sam Fox’s I Surrender (To The Spirit Of The Night). 😮 haha

I for one f****** loved it last night. Great show! The stage is excellent and much better than last year where they ruined it for me by having too many side shots that showed the audience fully lit. That was awful. This “portal” works well and camera work was decent. Best performances of the night for me were Italy, and Switzerland, along with Albania, Sweden and Poland. Lucio and Zoe actually brought tears to my eyes.. Zoe showed how less is indeed more. Just magnificent. Here’s my prediction on how the five NQs ranked: 11. Belgium 12. Cyprus 13. Croatia 14. Slovenia 15. Azerbaijan I believe Belgium just missed out at 11th and Cyprus came 12th by virtue of being the closer and getting enough points to not finish last but not enough to cross the line. Croatia might just be saved from a last place finish from being second-last position, so I think the last place is between Slovenia and Azerbaijan for two separate reasons. Slovenia might have finished last because it’s the earliest non-qualifier and thereby could have been forgotten, or Azerbaijan might… Read more »

I guess it’s all a matter of taste. For me the best were Switze rland, Spain and Alb ania’s performances. They were stunning in all senses and would be memorable winners. Italy’s was sweet and Netherl ands’ was good, too. Sweden’s is a great comedy but should not win the contest, in terns of song and voices ita not enough. Esto nia’s exceeds the limit of comedy in a song contest. not my cup of tea. All in all, a weak semi, but I really enjoyed the show. Good luck you all!

I love team Wiwi, but I wish that sometimes these reaction videos didn’t make it sound like it’s the Eurovision intelligentsia versus the general audience who can’t understand more complicated entries or art. It can read as condescending. In general, I think that Belgium goes too dark with the lighting. Not dark as in atmospheric, that fits this song, and I loved it. As a television viewer, though, it’s sometimes difficult to discern the performer or what’s happening. So, I think Strobe Lights needed more ambient light – not bright, technicolor – just a couple of notches higher overall. I… Read more »

A true song with start, middle and finish not attention seeking chaos with effects that after Nemo win took trends in Eurovision. Although I thought Belgium will go through I can’t pity him. Last couple of years Eurovision has really changed to worse. Even though Malmoe edition had quite a few exceptional hits and we had successful Tattoo and Chachacha the EBU is destroying the contest by removing jury vote in semifinals, mixing drag queens and LGBT too much into the music festival targetting the show to narrower group and countries, being politically biased (removing Russia and Belarus and keeping Israël), bending to the knees of Israel (silencing the audience, removing press conferences). Disqualification fan favourite NL after he got provoked, prerecorded backing vocals, adding more AI effects in graphics, war against funs,… Read more »

Two directions that I don’t want Eurovision to go are… joke entries that are not funny like Estonia, and good value acts but booooooring… like Portugal.

What focuses my attention are original, good, well produced acts like Al’banya, Po’land, Au’stria, Bel’gium, Switz’erland…

There has to be some obvious but enjoyable fillers like Nor’way, Nether’lands, Azerbai’jan… and some toilet breakers like Ukraine…

Re-listening to the show, some new conclusions -I’ve noted that the audience is quite more audible during Poland’s performance than any other (due to audio edition, I’m not saying it was the most supported entry). -Completely understandable that Cyprus got a nq -Justyna Steczkowska (or smth like that) ate -Enjoyed more the norwegian and ukrainian songs, but I still think Belgium was a little bit better (Red Sebastian’s choreo wasn’t well executed tbh) -The best staging of the night was the one that didn’t use the stage itself: Switzerland. My favorite ones yesterday were Albània and Switzerland, by far. I loved the staging of Albània so much, it was hypnotizing, especially the moments where she stopped singing and either danced or walked to the sound of that repeating word. And Switzerland can win again if you ask me, her entry is from another world. Also it’s interesting tgat hosting countries sometimes use completely different staging techniques than the rest, I wonder how does it work.

I think it was fun and I really like the presenters. I think it has been a great show so far. Well done Switzerland.

What is with Albánia sabotage here this year? The name needs approval and the comments about it are being massively downvoted. Ooooh, someone rally doesn’t want Albánia to win.

Calm down and enjoy the contest. If they win, well done. No sabotage and drama, please.

I’d think it’s an error, I don’t imagine someone trying to sabotage shqip, it would be rare as it’s a country that usually doesn’t compete well in esc

Having “producers choice” as a choice seems pointless – why bother having a random draw when most of the songs are going to be placed by the producers anyway! Bring back just 1st half 2nd half in the bowl, it’s more fair.

Does anyone know who staged the Belgian entry? I thought the way they used the space , the stage ( from right to left and left to right) the choreography and the camera work were brilliant! It suited the song perfectly but, sadly, that wasn’t enough.

The vocals were weak, the falsetto did not live up to the recorded version. Same with Cyprus, no shock to me they didn’t qualify. Absolutely over ambitious with the staging which led to vocals suffering.

Hans Pannecoucke. He also did Gustaph, Sennek, Duncan Laurence, The Common Linnets, Trijntje Oosterhuis, Manel Navarro. So some successes and some utter failures.

It’s incredible how the comments section disrespects so many countries, especially Portugal and San Marino. Portugal has been doing well with the public in recent years, and in my opinion, very well deserved. They don’t follow trends; they always present artists with immense talent. In my opinion, Iolanda achieved the best staging and perhaps the best voice of last year… This year they are presenting a ballad about the lives of immigrants, and obviously, it stood out for such a clean performance that contrasted with so many “joke entries” competing in the semi-final. Enough with the hate, and respect everyone!

I *think* I’ve recovered from last night. Biggest surprise for me (a very happy surprise) was Portugal qualifying. I’m so delighted one of my comfort songs this year actually managed to get through! On the other hand, I had San Marino down as a non-qualifier after the performance. Maybe having Italy voting yesterday helped a bunch, but you never know. Happy with the rest.

But pleeeeease, EBU, don’t make me go into the foetal position like last night when two of my faves were last to qualify again! I’m begging you (lol)

Slovenia, Azerbaijan and Belgium should have went through.

Run with U isn’t a bad song, but his vocals were very weak. It definitely didn’t deserve to go through.

Perhaps but when you look at the other qualifiers, especially Ukraine, they definitely should have made it through.

Weak vocals was clearly not an issue for many qualifiers last night

Ive seen a lot of “his vocals were very weak” comments with azerbaijan, belgium…Estonia had the worst vocals and he passed. Its more of popularity than vocals…bring back the jury, there you will see who is vocally correct

no Azerbaijan was so weak. One of the people I watched Eurovision with had this reaction when he sang “what’s wrong with his voice?”

I was impressed with Al ban ia last night: that performance felt exciting! Also proud of The Netherlands. Surprised about Belgium’s fate.

I wasn’t. Belgium’s song was very jarring. Vocals were good, but were also very irritating with strained high notes. I just think this was a very overrated song.

What seems to kicked Belgium out is the fact that all Scandinavians went through, probably giving high votes to each other, that we had Albania who got a lot of diaspora votes from them, and that left Belgium fighting for votes in southern Europe. Plus the performance was bad and the vocals were bad. What could be the deciding fact is that Portuguese diaspora from Belgium probably voted in high numbers, and it could end that Belgium kicked itself out of the finals. On San Marino, well it was fun, they had Italy, Portugal, Albania, Cyprus, Switzerland in this semi,… Read more »

Overjoyed by Iceland & San Marion getting through!! But Portugal’s sleeping pill had no place in final to me. (Glad other sleeping pills were eliminated, though.) And those shock NQ’s were eally quite a shock…

Why are there so many producer’s choices? I feel like there should only be four max. They might as well decide the whole running order… That being said, I’m happy about Albania getting second half.

It seems to me an inappropriate comparison. This year Alba nia plays in a different championship than Belgium. If you want to play this game, first ask yourself why Norway made it to the final and Belgium didn’t.

Seppe is a good guy with strong vocals, but the song was just another EDM track. He needs to come back in with a better song. The staging was overwhelming. Because of all the tiggers difficult to watch.

Trying again … extremely happy for Portugal. I have a feeling we will have a surprise result in the final, whereas Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Estonia will share the televotes and thereby get less. Some jury favourite will sail on up, ie Italy, Switzerland, Alba.ia or France. And then we have Austria, I have a feeling they will do good with juries, but Im not sure about televote, it might be to simliar to last years winner, and so far the more queer-ish songs were not supported. We will se, anyway exciting!

There is no way that juries will not help their darling Sweden as much as they can. They always vote massively for Sweden while they vote down it’s closest ‘rivals’

Yeah, that is so sad! But if they do it this year, while having previously voted down all other “comedic” acts, it’s more than clear fo everyone that they just favour Sweden – favoritism at its worst, TBH!

IMO Iceland, Estonia and Sweden (+ any comedy acts coming from 2nd semi) are actually sharing & fighting for the same televotes, Finland not so much 😉 As it’s not a comedy act.

The first semi is over and it was fantastic production-wise (well done, Swiss!!), the interval act was amazing and overall it was fun and happy. Congrats, SRG! Song-wise, it was very weak. I only liked: Belgium, Sweden, Albania and Italy + Switzerland. Then there was a bunch of songs that were okay, not exciting, not bad, but nothing to die for, like Poland, Netherlands (I explain below), Norway, San Marino. The real revelation for me were Italy and Switzerland. Lucio was so authentic (and I usually don’t like the Italian entries), it should get massive jury votes. Switzerland gave me… Read more »

On one hand surprise results are fun and keep the suspense going. On the other hand I didn’t like these results. Being a really weak year makes it even more unfair for countries like Cyprus, Belgium and Slovenia not going through.
